"We got the results from your MRI and you need to come in".
Um, what? That sounds a
She said, "don't worry, you don't have any tumors or anything".
Well, that does help, a little bit, but still, this is his BRAIN we're talking about.
So Chris (understandably) was quite concerned and was able to get an appointment that morning. I went with him. Turns out the MRI showed what's called a Chiari I Malformation, which essentially means (I think) that a teensy bit (like 5-6 mm) of the back part of his brain called the cerebellum (which controls balance) extends into the hole in the skull where the spine attaches (it's not supposed to do this). This can cause pressure on the cerebellum (or the brain stem?) which can result in headaches, dizziness, numbness, and ringing in the ears.
We are in the process of scheduling a consult with a neurologist to get a confirmation of the diagnosis and to see if there are any treatments that are recommended. From what we can tell, generally the treatment is to treat the symptoms. If that doesn't work, it appears as though surgery is the other option.
Would you please pray with me that we can get in with a great doctor, and that it ends up being no big deal really? It's scary when we're talking about my husband's BRAIN, you know?

will pray . . . absolutely! peace to you guys.
ReplyDeleteI took care of a patient with Chiari last month. From what we learned here with the patient who was in our care, surgery can be very effective when the other treatments don't work. Try not to worry (which I'm sure is impossible) and keep us posted!!! Praying for all of you!
ReplyDeleteWill be praying for him, you and his doctor.

ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am stephanie's sister-in-law juli. I had chair surgery 6 years ago. My brain was 25 mm into my spinal cord, wrapped around my brainstem and cutting off ALL spinal fluid in the back of my spinal cord. It's going to be ok. I am healthy and have very few limitations. We serve a wonderful God who knows our needs and worries.
I sent steph a long message with some basic info. Feel free to get in touch with me. I will be praying.
Juli
Of course I will pray. This stinks... hope they figure it out quick!

ReplyDeleteUm, this is so weird, but me too. Migraine-like headaches for about 3-4 weeks now. Got MRI results on Friday saying slight Chiari. Going to see a neurologist on Tuesday. I would love to know any information you get and am happy to share with you what I find out.
ReplyDeleteAlso...love the blog. And after reading the About Me section, really like you too. I hate sarcastic people. A LOT.
Happy thoughts for healthy brains all around.
