we're not in t-town anymore

I've been hearing about downpours, and flooding, and hail back home. (You know, the usual stuff). Which makes spending Thanksgiving week in sunny San Diego with Chris' folks just that much sweeter. Yesterday we visited Legoland, today we met up with an online friend turned real life friend and her kiddos for lunch at the Wave House (and I may have even persuaded her to snap our Christmas card pic), and tomorrow is breakfast at the Mission followed by shopping for the girls and touring the Midway for the boys.  Surprisingly, this vacation has gone slowly so far...which hardly EVER happens, especially since we are having so much fun! Our condo is literally ON THE FREAKING OCEAN. I apologize if you've been following me on instagram, as I have been bragging all over the place over there about being on vacation. And not at home in the pouring rain. As Grace would say, "sorry not sorry".

linking up with Heidi (we miss you Heidi!)

see ya, suckers!

We are getting the hell outta dodge. In other words, it started raining here in good ol' Washington State, and I'm pretty sure it's not going to stop for the next 7 months, so we're going to spend a week in sunny San Diego. Starting tomorrow. Except all week I was checking the upcoming weather on my weather app and the forecast called for 79-80.

Except that I was looking at the weather for Palm Springs, not San Diego.

Which is about 10 degrees cooler.

Whatever, I'll take it.

I have failed at Nablopomo. Whatever. I had bigger problems this week.

is your refrigerator running? and also, artichokes.

Did I tell you that the night before I left for EVO our refrigerator leaked onto our hardwood floors in the kitchen? So we shut off the water to the fridge and have been without cold fridge water AND ICE* for 3 weeks. Well last week the part that was needed to fix the cracked water line arrived, and today was FINALLY our scheduled appointment for the repair people to come fix it. So now we have ice and cold water and all is well again in the world. Oh, except for the fact that our floor still looks like crap and will need to be refinished which will require us to be out of our home for 5 days at some point. #firstworldproblems

And so? Tonight we had artichokes. (Which has absolutely nothing to do with the refrigerator, or the floors, or really anything, except for the fact that we like artichokes). With mayonaise. What do you dip your artichokes in?

*It is quite difficult to drink iced coffee, or iced tea without the aforementioned ICE. Which is a problem.

sick day

It's been a busy week around here. Chris was gone all week. Grace was gone MOST of the week. Charlie got a big boy bed. Camden had two sleepovers. Charlie spent all of yesterday and most of today with gastro issues (if you know what I mean) and as a result has a super turbo sore bottom. I cancelled TWO girls' nights in, and one playdate with friends. I got my desk mostly cleaned off. I watched Season Two of Downton Abbey. I finished reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. And now? Chris is home. Grace is home. Charlie is napping in his big boy bed. And I'm holed up in my room with my laptop. For just a little while.

Happy Friday friends!

thursday

It is June 7th. And it is POURING. There is something so wrong about that. So while you all have hit summer time, here in Tacoma we can't even take our kids to the park to get rid of some of that pent up energy. So my friend Heidi and I did what no self-respecting parents would do and took our kids to the McDonald's play land. At 9:30 in the morning. There may or may not have been a sausage McMuffin and a one dollar (any size!) coffee involved. I'll never tell.

Also, it's so dark (and dreary) outside that it's ridiculously dark INSIDE the house and the actual HEATER came on because it was so dang cold this morning. Did I mention that it is JUNE? I have SOUP in the CROCKPOT, people! It's ridiculous.

Also also? Pretzels for lunch today. Don't judge.

tuesday

Oh hey, Tuesday! What's up? Charlie and I are just hanging out today. He was being a complete and total butt this morning, refusing to eat any actual breakfast and demanding milk and fruit snacks. I finally gave in with cheese and crackers because that's pretty healthy (and it's not fruit snacks). We dropped off some clothes to consign, we visited with my Grama (pics for wordless wednesday tomorrow!) and we stopped at the Spar for dip chicken strips and fries for lunch. Somebody fell asleep in the car on the way home (and it wasn't me, thankfully), so I have a couple of hours to play on the internet, fuss around with lightroom, or read my kindle.

show off your shot

This weekend I spent without my family. And it was awesome. I mean, I love my family to pieces, but to be in charge of only myself for 48 hours? Pure Bliss. Friday afternoon Heidi and I headed up to Bellevue for some shopping and eating and jumping on beds. Saturday we did a little more shopping, then I dropped Heidi off and came home and spent the rest of the night with Ryan Gosling. Sorry, Ewan MacGregor, Ryan has my heart now. Or I should say my crush. Chris has my heart still. (Hi honey!). I watched Drive which was OMGSOVIOLENTbutOMGSOGOOD, and then I watched Crazy, Stupid, Love. Twice.

This scene had me laughing OUT LOUD. TWICE!

This week I'm sharing probably the last photo from our weekend in Seattle last week.  It's the Convention Center, which was right near our hotel. Cool, huh?

Won't you join me and show off your shot...it's easy!

and then, she {snapped}

seriously? part 2

Thursday afternoon I spent as a laundry whore. Meaning I did ALL the laundry. Washed, dried, folded.

Right about the time I was pretty much all done one of my darling children informed me that she (or he) needed hers (or his) dark jeans washed. For tomorrow, of course.

Where might those particular jeans be?, you might ask...

On her/his floor. Of course.

So take note: Around here apparently clean clothes go in the dirty laundry, and dirty clothes go on our respective bedroom floors.(Or sometimes shoved in dresser drawers).

I know you'll all come visit me in the loony bin. Right?

seriously.

Do you think it's possible to go completely insane by finding the kids' clean (and folded even!) clothes in the dirty laundry?

dear target

Dear Target,

It's been a long time coming, but I can't hide it any longer, I think we should see other people. Or, if I'm honest, I've already been seeing other people. You just don't do it for me anymore. I've thought about it a lot lately and really, it's not me, it's you.

Things started going downhill when you decided to add groceries. I understand people need to eat. But "people who need to eat" is NOT your target demographic. I'm pretty sure that demographic belongs to a grocery store, like Safeway, or Fred Meyer, or (God forbid), even Albertson's. Adding groceries itself may not have been your downfall, had you expanded your entire store as well, but instead, bananas and pork chops stole precious square footage away from the things I loved most about you...aisles and aisles of affordable trendy clothes for me, my kids, and my house.

Who are you and what have you done with the Target I once loved?!

Your junior's and women's clothing sections are now WAY too crowded. I can barely get my cart with my screaming toddler through there (PS I do love your new carts though). And when I find something that might be cute, that I'd like to hold up in front of myself and admire how it might look on me? I can't. Because THERE ARE NO FREAKING MIRRORS IN YOUR ENTIRE STORE! How on earth you ever could have thought that would be a good idea is beside me. Even so, sometimes I'll find something that I think might be worthy of an actual trip to the dressing room, but then still, I end up disappointed. Nothing is cute. Nothing fits. And it's not even that cheap anymore. Your shoe section is pitiful. It's tiny. I did find a cute pair of red patent leather flats recently to replace an old pair of red patent leather flats (previously purchased at the "old" Target), and the new ones? I hate them. They hurt my feet. The back elastic shoves my toes up front where they aren't supposed to be. Why'd you do that? Why'd you even change them? And your home decor? Cute things to make my house look pretty? Quit moving them around! I can't even find them. Do you even have them anymore?

You used to have this Global Bazaar thing every January/February, where you'd bring in tons of really great housewares and furniture. (Not the crappy back to school stuff either). I got my kitchen table there one year. And I still love that. And I got an entire set of dishes (on clearance even) another year. But the past few years instead of that you bring in bulk sized cleaning crap and diapers? Really? Have you met Costco? Because they have that market covered.

I kind of think you're trying to hard. You can't be everything to everybody. You need to go back to what you're good at it...find me some really cool things and sell them to me at great prices. Make me WANT to browse your aisles and get excited finding just the perfect knick knack, or a great skirt that I'll wear the heck out of. I used to love going to Target, for NO reason. Now, it makes me claustrophobic. I dread it. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to let you go.

I hope we can still be friends, I just really think we need a break.

tips for travelling with a two year old. and other such wiseness.

oh hey people! greetings from sunny palm springs. I would share a current shot of my weather app, but if you follow me on instagram (@andthenshesnapped) you are probably quite sick of my "vacation" photos anyway. I'm sure you can figure it out (PS it's NOT raining).

Charlie did great on the plane, thanks to two things. 1) snacks and 2) his "new games" (aka iphone). OK, three things, he was also buckled into his carseat the entire time, which meant he was, STUCK. As a public service to you I thought I would share with you, my adoring readers, some "lessons learned" on this particular trip:
  1. Applesauce does not make the TSA guys happy when you try and bring it through security (apparently it counts as a liquid).
  2. Don't try and stream Curious George videos across the airline's wi-fi (it's REALLY slow), better idea is to download shows onto your device beforehand (which we plan to do before the return trip)
  3. Don't apologize before the flight even starts to the old bitty in the seat ahead of you for your toddler's (probable) kicking during the flight. The hag bitched us out afterwards, saying "I know you apologized earlier, but this flight was MISERABLE, and I'm on VACATION". Seriously, that happened. What she expected us to do about it? Especially AFTER THE FACT? I have no idea.
And now for your enjoyment, a photo of said toddler eating pretzel #3,428:

And a gratuitous shot from the air (Also, if I'm honest I have no idea what gratuitous means):

i pulled the trigger. twice.

You may not know this about me, but I'm not really a big purchaser. I mean, hell yes, I LOVE to shop, but I am such a bargain shopper that I spend an inordinate amount of time researching large (or large-ish) purchases before I can commit. Chris and I are quite different in this area. (I like to shop, he likes to BUY). But today, I put on my big girl panties and went to the AT&T store and got me my very own iPhone. Like WITH a CONTRACT and everything. It's so pretty. I love it. I don't know why I hesitated so long. (Yes I do actually, it's because I'm cheap). But anyway, I was on such a roll that I came home and ordered a Kindle Fire. Something else I've wanted for a while. I even had $200 sitting in my amazon account just BEGGING to be spent. So, it was really the right thing to do. The ONLY thing to do.

And here is a photo that has nothing to do with pulling the trigger:

linking up with my friend Heidi

tuesday

So I had a migraine last night, and started my period this morning (sorry to the one guy who reads this, wait, IS there one guy who reads this?). My headache is not gone, but is a little better after two doses of Imitrex. I have to take my car in this morning and wait with it, because it's been telling me I have "low oil level" for the past two weeks though I do not, in fact, have "low oil level" (Lord help me if it takes longer than an hour as that is about as long as Charlie or I can handle, even with wi-fi). I also have a bunch of taxes I need to get started on today, so hopefully my headache will be gone and my baby will take a nice LOOOOOONNNGGG nap this afternoon.

In other (good!) news I got my ticket to Evo Conference yesterday! It's in Park City, Utah, in July (what can I say, I like to plan ahead)! and if any of you are going let me know, I'd love to meet you! If you're not going you totally SHOULD go, it looks really fun! I'm trying to convince Heidi to come!

Charlie just fell and got a bloody lip, which WE all know is NOT a big deal. Could somebody please let Camden know? He's crying more than Charlie is. He is so protective of his baby brother I'm pretty sure he thinks we need to go immediately to the ER. Oh, and did I mention my head hurts?

today I will be productive.

Yesterday I updated my facebook status to say that I needed a wife. Somebody who would fold all the clothes that Charlie "helped" with (which, by the way, are STILL all over my bedroom floor), somebody to make dinner, clean the kitchen, and drive kids around. Needless to say I didn't get any offers, and today I need someone to do all that stuff and then some. I need to figure out when I'm going to get my crown done, choose Charlie's two year old photo from the (not very exciting) studio pics I had done last week, do more taxes, pay some bills, and all the while try not to scream at my kids.

tuesday

Happy Tuesday, peeps! A Tuesday that feels like a Monday since everybody was home yesterday. Except we are that much closer to Friday since it really ISN'T Monday! Woohoo!

In other news, do you ever feel like you can't remember the last time you went to the bathroom by yourself? I mean without somebody banging on the door? Or showered without somebody barging in with some "emergency" like "should I wear short sleeves or long sleeves today" (because the weather is THAT much different than it has been for the past six months?). Or sat down to relax without somebody immediately demanding more milk, or a snack, or...I could go on and on and on.

I was so touched by all of your sweet comments on my change of plans post this weekend. It's so nice to be reminded that not everybody is as outgoing as they pretend to be!

This is what I want to do today...watch TV with no pants on. Wait, that's weird. Nevermind.

linking up with sweet shot tuesday and communal global.

Thank you to all of you who have already linked up in yesterday's Show Off Your Shot! It's a great group that participates every week, and if you're not one of 'em, you totally should be! Remember you have until Friday to link up, and I do love seeing your photos, so please do show off your shot if you haven't already!

wherein I had a change of plans

it's about time I come clean. I am NOT the social, outgoing, fun person I pretend to be. I am actually quite the opposite. I'm a homebody. I don't like surprises, and trying new things is really NOT my cup o' tea.

last night I was supposed to go meet up with some local bloggers for dinner up in Bellevue. some of these gals I have met before, and some I have not. some I really like, and some I just haven't gotten to know.

at the last minute I chickened out. I don't know why. I decided I didn't want to drive ALL the way to Bellevue (too far from home?). I worried that I would feel like I didn't belong (I am about 10 years older than the group). it just brought back memories of high school and always wanting to fit in with the "in crowd", although I AM a grown up now, and I DO realize that there really is no such thing as the "in crowd."

so I bailed at the last minute, and went on a much needed date with my hubby (which is a whole other story), but now I'm full of regret. regret that I am NOT that other Rachel, the one who will go anywhere, do anything at the drop of a hat. the one who doesn't get filled with anxiety at the silliest things.

this is me. take it or leave it.

fun with cropping

don't mind me... just sitting in my bed, watching grey's anatomy, playing around with lightroom.
you know, the usual.

Oh! and I'm so excited because tomorrow I get to go meet our friends Dan and Lindsy's brand new baby! SO excited.

"play choo choo cars mom"

Charlie loves to line all his cars up like a choo choo train. It's pretty damn cute.

Oh, and FYI...I ate pizza for dinner tonight (not soup, not jello, not soup)! I've decided that I'll know I'm completely recovered (from my surgery last week) when I can eat a cheeseburger and I think it's gonna be soon!!  woo hoo!

Are you here looking for SHOW OFF YOUR SHOT? It's been moved to Mondays, but you can totally still link up this week...just click here. Come see what everybody else has been showing off, then add yours too!

thanksgiving, etc.

The last time the Drechsel's had a photo of the whole family at the same time was taken when Camden was Charlie's age, so, I wanted to try and get a more recent one at brunch on Sunday. It didn't work.

I decided I don't like photos taken with a remote. At least large group photos. Too hard to keep everyone visible!

One more try. Then forget it. We need a real photographer!

These girls are easy to photograph. They are photogenic, and there are only three of them.

The next day Charlie was sick. And the next day after that. And the next day after that. Thank God for a new Curious George holiday special that we DVR'd and watched ALL. DAY. LONG. Isn't he cute though? Even when he's sick.

Charlie was all better on Thanksgiving. YAY! I somehow convinced Chris to put the tree up ON Thanksgiving. (I just had to promise that that was it...no decorating it or anything until the next day). This is our second year with our fake tree. And after a brief moment of panic when we thought the lights weren't going to work (it was operator error), ta-da, they went on, and we were sold. So easy! And no needles! And no forgetting needing to water everyday! Boom.

What Thanksgiving is all about. I love Thanksgiving food. I ate this for dinner. Then breakfast  and dinner the next day. Pretty sure it was the best gravy I ever ate. I love thyme. I made the white trash broccoli casserole myself. It was damn good. If you're white trash like me. And you like broccoli. And butter. Speaking of butter. If you don't like butter (or heavy cream, or hollandaise mashed potatoes...what?) you probably don't want to come to Thanksgiving with the Drechsel's.

Day after Thanksgiving means we're allowed to decorate! Charlie got the hang of it pretty quickly. This year is going to be so fun with him!

Totally posed. Chris doesn't usually have his arm around me as we're decorating the tree! What a goof.

Once the tree was done it was time for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" read by Dad.

Followed by our first official viewing of Elf for the season.

How was YOUR Thanksgiving? Do you have any leftovers left? I ate all ours.

super random.

So first things. I announced the winner of the shabby apple giveaway. I'm pretty sure Tricia is going to get it in my size and send it to me for Christmas. : )

Next thing, thanks to everybody who voted for me as 2011 Top Blog over on the Blog Guidebook. While I'm nowhere NEAR winning (and I'm ok with that), it looks like I may have enough clicks to make it through to the second round tomorrow! (edited to say I DID make it to the next round...here's the link for second round voting).

I also entered last year's Christmas photo in a contest over at Modern Bird Studios. I haven't asked for your votes, because, well, I HATE asking for your votes. But, if you are bored and want something else to click feel free to 'like' my photo over here. Mine is the 9th row down on the left (you remember my Abbey Road Christmas photo, right?) Anyway, the prize for this is the winning photo made into a custom art piece. I would be totally psyched to win that.
This morning I was excited to see that my photo was chosen as one of Angie and Amy's favorites at I Heart Faces. This is the second time in the history of FOREVER! I was totally excited!

I want to let you know about another photo contest I just found out about where you can win $1,000 CASH and a $500 Tiny Prints gift card. Seriously! I haven't entered yet, still trying to figure out which photo to enter, but if you want to give it a shot (haha, I crack myself up), click here. There are a bunch of different categories, so I'm sure you'll find one to enter!

Tonight we're going to some friends for dinner and I am bringing dessert. Some oreo stuffed brownies I saw on pinterest. Pretty sure pinterest is going to make me fat. Oh, and I've also been starting my Christmas wish list. What are YOU wanting for Christmas? Speaking of Christmas, I started my shopping yesterday! I got a good chunk done all at once, thanks to Amazon.

Anybody watching American Horror Story? Man I love that show.

Also, I love these guys:

Pretty sure this post has more links than any other post I've ever posted before.
If you read the whole thing you're AWESOME!
