Dear Target,
It's been a long time coming, but I can't hide it any longer, I think we should see other people. Or, if I'm honest, I've already been seeing other people. You just don't do it for me anymore. I've thought about it a lot lately and really, it's not me, it's you.
Things started going downhill when you decided to add groceries. I understand people need to eat. But "people who need to eat" is NOT your target demographic. I'm pretty sure that demographic belongs to a grocery store, like Safeway, or Fred Meyer, or (God forbid), even Albertson's. Adding groceries itself may not have been your downfall, had you expanded your entire store as well, but instead, bananas and pork chops stole precious square footage away from the things I loved most about you...aisles and aisles of affordable trendy clothes for me, my kids, and my house.
Who are you and what have you done with the Target I once loved?!
Your junior's and women's clothing sections are now WAY too crowded. I can barely get my cart with my screaming toddler through there (PS I do love your new carts though). And when I find something that might be cute, that I'd like to hold up in front of myself and admire how it might look on me? I can't. Because THERE ARE NO FREAKING MIRRORS IN YOUR ENTIRE STORE! How on earth you ever could have thought that would be a good idea is beside me. Even so, sometimes I'll find something that I think might be worthy of an actual trip to the dressing room, but then still, I end up disappointed. Nothing is cute. Nothing fits. And it's not even that cheap anymore. Your shoe section is pitiful. It's tiny. I did find a cute pair of red patent leather flats recently to replace an old pair of red patent leather flats (previously purchased at the "old" Target), and the new ones? I hate them. They hurt my feet. The back elastic shoves my toes up front where they aren't supposed to be. Why'd you do that? Why'd you even change them? And your home decor? Cute things to make my house look pretty? Quit moving them around! I can't even find them. Do you even have them anymore?
You used to have this Global Bazaar thing every January/February, where you'd bring in tons of really great housewares and furniture. (Not the crappy back to school stuff either). I got my kitchen table there one year. And I still love that. And I got an entire set of dishes (on clearance even) another year. But the past few years instead of that you bring in bulk sized cleaning crap and diapers? Really? Have you met Costco? Because they have that market covered.
I kind of think you're trying to hard. You can't be everything to everybody. You need to go back to what you're good at it...find me some really cool things and sell them to me at great prices. Make me WANT to browse your aisles and get excited finding just the perfect knick knack, or a great skirt that I'll wear the heck out of. I used to love going to Target, for NO reason. Now, it makes me claustrophobic. I dread it. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to let you go.
I hope we can still be friends, I just really think we need a break.
Ah, yes, those were the days of Target. I remember.....
ReplyDeleteit's funny. i used to go to Target all the time. Our Target is next door to Costco and when I went to Costco, I always went to Target first...loved their clothes, home stuff...and now I stopped going nad never really thought about why...until now. I agree completely. they've lost it.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree and we were just talking about this at MOPS - all 70of us!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think Corporate needs to read this - matter of fact - maybe I'll send it to them!!
Yes, exactly. Who goes to Target with a grocery list of actual groceries? They are currently remodeling the one in my small city and I anticipate that I will quickly grow tired of the new model.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! The Target's where I live all have a full grocery section. At first it was great, a one stop shop, but I have been less impressed with their clothes and fun decor. Now, I don't look forward to going to Target and go a lot less! I used to make my way to Target two or three times a week. Now, they are lucky to get my business once a week.
ReplyDeleteI used to love their clothes, shoes and random decor items. :-(
AMEN!
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteYeah, all the Targets are all the same Super Target...we have the original Target here...and even that has become lame and uncool.
ReplyDelete"Nothing is cute. Nothing fits. And it's not even that cheap anymore. Your shoe section is pitiful." I agree!!!! But what will replace Target!?!
ReplyDeleteI've been over Target for some time now. I hit Old Navy for clothes; thrift stores for stuff for my house; and my grocery store for toiletries. I only go to Target when it's a must.
ReplyDeletePrices have gone up, but quality and selection have gone down. It's a bummer, but it's reality.
I see that more and more with almost every store. But agreed I think Target clothing is getting for tiny people. Hey some woman have curves! I thought the shoe section sucked bad .. they used to have it pretty good - now there is like no sneakers there.. who does not sell sneakers?!!
ReplyDelete*sigh
oh and jewelry that is $10 is not clearance!
AHHH the lack of mirrors drives me insane. I have to walk halfway across the store to find a mirror. Not. cool.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHA! Thanks for the laugh i needed it tonight! I agree it's over crowded.. But target and i are still friends! I definitely used to go once a week, now maybe 1-2 times a month!
ReplyDeleteDon't even get me started on their maternity selection!!! What happened?!? I do't even know where to go now though. I thought I was just being over emotional and pregnant. Thanks for making me feel better Rachel.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I wrote a letter to target kinda like this. Too funny!
ReplyDeleteYou got my relationship with Target exactly right. No mirrors, crappy shoes, too small clothes. I started ordering my cleaning products online and thrift shopping for cheap clothes. I still haven't found a home decor substitute yet...
ReplyDeleteAhahaaa... Holy cow! This is the funniest/saddest thing Rachel! As much as I heart Target, I SO agree w/ ya, HE has totally changed. I like to think of him as a true love... that I recently broke up with... I still love him, Like to still "hang out" sometimes... but I'm on the prowl for someone new!
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad. I used to love going to Target just to get away from my hubs and kids, browse and find a great deal. I still like to browse but it's not the same.
ReplyDeleteLoved reading this post and the comments, had me cracking up.
I'm with you on this! I don't want to buy groceries at Target - and I hate it when I get behind someone in line who has a cart full of them. And they should just get rid of the shoe dept. It used to be SO good, now I never even look b/c it's such a disappointment. I don't think I can remember the last clothing item I bought there, either....
ReplyDeleteI miss old Target!
This post is dead on! Two years ago, my family moved to the country, far away from all Target stores. It used to be the highlight of my weekend if we went to "town" to shop at Target. We recently moved back and I was horrified. Everything you said is exactly what I feel! Oh, and I also sympathize with Nessa-- I tried to maternity shop at Target this past weekend and left empty-handed. Sad day.
ReplyDeleteAMEN! You said it all perfectly! The closest Target to us is 1/2 hour away and I used to get so excited to make a trip of it because I knew I'd come back with so many cute things. WHAT HAPPENED?!?! So sad!! :(
ReplyDeleteWish they would listen to you!!!
I know, right! I was just thinking this yesterday! I couldn't find hardly any pants in my size. It made me really depressed and not want to go shopping! Its just not as fun anymore :(
ReplyDeleteTwo thumbs up. It is sad when a good thing is ruined.
ReplyDeleteAmen! My thoughts exactly!
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the last time I went to Target and walked out happy - if i go now I am usually disappointed or feel like I still have to go somewhere else to get what I need (i.e. your clothes example)
ReplyDeleteSo sad. Used to be my favorite place to go browse (and spend money!)
Totally agree with you on this! We hardly ever find ourselves at Target these days!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree... We live in the Bahamas... so I STILL look forward to target cluttered or not because well lets face it .. the only store on my island is a GROCERY store LMAO ... so Target is a big step up either way!!! but i sOOOOO agree with you 100% Love how you wrote it too! :P fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. Our Target now sells food and I hate it! We have at least 5 huge supermarkets,a Wal-mart that has a huge area where you can buy food(if you want to) and we have a Sams club. All in one small city. I miss the old Target and wish they would change back. I do like some of thier newer home goods but that is about it.
ReplyDeleteMary
Good for you! I can not agree with you more (except that I did get a really cute scarf & sweater the other day - but I paid more than I meant too) just think how much money you'll save :)
ReplyDeleteOver from SITS! All I have to say is yes, yes, yes. Clothing is so expensive and I hate how many food aisles there are now. Just not okay.
ReplyDeleteThe food isles drive me nuts because people stop their card RIGHT in the middle of the isle. Argh!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from SITS. Have a great weekend!!
Great post! Sometimes it seems that Target is trying too hard to compete with Walmart - cheap quality at not so cheap prices. I won't shop at Walmart and I no longer shop at Target.
ReplyDeleteUM HELLO WHAT DO YOU SPEAK OF
ReplyDelete"NEW CARTS."
???
I'm reading this and thinking "but it's TARGET!" I live in the middle of NOWHERE, NM and all we have is Walmart, one grocery store and a "mall" that has been nicknamed "The Hall". I would LOVE to have a Target no matter how pathetic! :)
ReplyDeleteOy... you wrote exactly what I would have written. UGH UGH UGH
