Here's the before: see that beige-y-pinkish tile? me no likey.
This is the stuff you want. It worked like a charm. No sanding, no priming, just a little wipe down with a sponge, then dry and paint. It's oil based, so it stinks, but it goes on great.

I'm liking the progress, but now I REALLY need to get rid of that brass. I used the same paint on the brass surround, but the two stripes on the grates I used a high heat spray paint since I could take those outside (they come off). I roughed up the brass with some sandpaper real quick, and sprayed. It looks pretty good, I think I may do another coat eventually.
Seriously. I love the transformation. And it cost less than twenty bucks! (or free for you if you want to use some of my leftover paint!)
I really like the fact that the paint is not glossy, I think that would've cheapened how it looked. It's a nice satin finish.
What do you think? Looks pretty good, huh? Are you going to try it yourself? Dare I try painting the bathroom tile in my bedroom?

NOW you're ready for Santa ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love (borrow, get inspired by) your DIY energy!!
Looks great. Right before I got pregnant with addison I decided to paint her ENTIRE bathroom tile. It was one of those old 50s light pink and sorta grey/purple tiles. I painted them all white. It worked great and almost 3 years later still looks amazing. I will say I think I was high for a week from the fumes but it was totally worth it. I actually blogged about it if you want to see http://www.stoneyville.net/2009/07/old-is-new-again.html
ReplyDeleteIt really looks great! Do you have trouble keeping Charlie away from the fireplace? Just curious because we are about to light ours for the first time and I am kind of scared about whether Will will be too curious about it!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY love it! Can you believe we don't have a fire place?! We've been thinking of putting a gas one in. I vote yes! Your house is surely ready for Santa now.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks awesome!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks super, friend. I think you are ready to tackle your bathroom tile.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think you should TOTALLY start a DIY blog, calling it and then, she {flipped} (you know, like flipping a house; sprucing it up and then moving the hell on) which would showcase all of the awesome shiz you fix up. I would guest post frequently, showing in graphic detail what happens when you try to beautify your surroundings only to fail miserably because your house f*cking hates you.
I'm ready when you are to get this little endeavor off the ground. :)
Looks great! I didn't realize tile would be paintable like that! I know a few people who will love this info!
ReplyDeleteLooking good, Toolman Tim!
ReplyDeleteBe-Yoo-Teeful!!
ReplyDeleteAnd is it me or is that a new header I spy up there? Love it!!
Love it. And Heidi's idea is GENIOUS! Can I have a guest post about flipping? As in flipping out on my kids?
ReplyDeleteOh wow, it looks awesome! I love the black/white contrast, well done!
ReplyDeleteI want to paint our fireplace, it's all red brick, but hubs is totally in love with the brick. Bummer.
What a difference! I love the contrast! I'm totally game for painting tile :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I never knew you cold paint tile!

Maybe you should consider turning your blog into something more DIY-ish. You did such a great job! Love the black. You won't have to call chimney cleaners as often.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day Rachel... I'm already a fan, so i can't be your 1000th follower (bummer)
ReplyDeleteYou could TOTALLY be a DIY blogger - I'm a huge fan of your DIY posts :)
xx
I feel kinda special. I'm your 1,000th follower. Cool, huh? Popping in from SITS and I am loving your blog. You had me at the title. The black on the fireplace looks a million times better, more modern. Nice work, lady!

Oooh, that looks very pretty. Would have been great in my previous house where we had a HUGE green fireplace. Very, very ugly. Of course it was a rental so painting would have been out the question. My landlady would have had a heart attach if I had painted her pride and joy.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! Enjoy the comment love today.

You are one brave woman! Looks great! Happy SITS day!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
You did a great job- kudos!
ReplyDeletePlease tell me what camera you have? Your pictures are beautiful & I am in desperate need of a new camera! Thank you!!!
It looks great. I've got pinkish tile on my fireplace, too. Now you've got me thinking. Hm.
ReplyDeleteI like the contrast between the black tile and the white shelves. It looks really good with the fire on!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! We have black tile around our basement fireplace as well. I think it's a really nice contrast.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!
That looks awesome! Who knew you could paint tile...not me! Visiting from SITS, off to explore some more!
ReplyDeleteImpressive! You're one very creative woman and your DIY project looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI love the change! I like darker colors better myself. Great job!
ReplyDeletelooks awesome! i had no idea how easy it could be!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it looks much better now, and congrats for having done it yourself. Oh, and happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteI love the look - so much better than the beige/pink tile. Great job!
ReplyDeleteYou've inspired me. I hate the tile around my fireplace too...and I never even thought to paint it!
ReplyDeleteNow that's my kind of crafting! I think you should rule DIY blogging. Happy SITS day
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm so impressed! I had no idea you could paint tile.
ReplyDeleteI totally pretend to be a DIY blogger sometimes too! I've heard about painting tile, but I've been leery of it. Your fireplace looks great. And I totally agree that glossy wouldn't have looked good. Nice job! I say go for it in your bedroom. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so great! I love the new color.

Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteThose tiles came out great! I'd love to do that in my house...but I think that the design gods would freak out and cause a plague if I painted over the original 120+ year old brickwork!
Pretty--when's your stint on HGTV??
ReplyDeleteJust popped in from SITS! What a great idea to paint the tile! Gives me an idea for how we can remedy this slight problem we have in the kitchen. Now if only I can buy me some of this special paint.
ReplyDeleteI love it. And you're right, it looks so much better!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. It doesn't look like a tile at all. Good job!
ReplyDeletebathroom tiles
HAPPY SITS DAY!
ReplyDeleteI love the built-ins you have! Very jealous of those! Your pictures look so crisp - what camera do you use?!
If I ever get a fireplace - I'll keep this post in mind! ;o)
How could you paint your fireplace in such a perfect manner...It looks awesome and too good indeed...your transformation effort is quite wise and extra-ordinary cool...just need your research paper in the painting arena...
ReplyDeletemedical residency programs Thesis writing involves several processes which makes the entirety of the experience both exciting and challenging. From choosing a researchable topic that has not been done by other students and eventually narrowing it down to become a uniquely original work to soliciting the help of a research supervisor and in embarking on data collection and writing the paper, these are some of the tasks that almost all undergraduate and graduate students working on a thesis consider as stressful. In spite of the many challenges that students have to put up with, undeniably, the thesis project is an important project-based and challenge-based educational experience that helps in building character and in preparing students for their chosen career. One particular skill that is indispensable and which perhaps is unknowingly cultivated among students as they work on a thesis is the ability to work with a group of superiors.
ReplyDeleteI did this to my fireplace tile tonight after finding your blog! So many things about your house remind me of mine...must've been built around the same time!
ReplyDeleteNice article and great knowledge about ms international. I love this story and enjoy with your words!
