Howdy y'all!
This week, my crazy cool talented daughter, Grace chose her favorite photo and the winner is...
Tricia from Through my Lens
Grace chose this photo because she liked the editing, and how bright it is.
Congratulations, Tricia, here is your winner button, (if you want it!):
It's week ELEVEN now and this week I am sharing a little bit about my new found love for my speedlight.
I used to refuse to use my flash. Because, ick. But then I got my external flash and after months of it collecting dust in my camera bag I finally took the plunge and installed it on my camera. I haven't taken it off since. (This may also have something to do with the fact that it's freaking dark all the time).
Anyway, it's pretty easy to use right off the bat, but through trial and error I found a couple ways I like to "tweak it". First off, I tilt the flash up, so that instead of blasting my subject with a shot of way too bright light, the light hits the ceiling and illuminates the entire area, rather than JUST my subject. This avoids those nasty red eyes and yucky blown out skin. The second thing I do is I set my flash exposure compensation to -.7 (I shoot with a Nikon D60, but you can just read your owner's manual, or google how to change yours). This just tones the flash down a bit.
Here's an example of my favorite subject, taken with my speedlight today.
Isn't he cute?
What tip can you share this week? Anything? Please link up to your blog and share something about how you set up or took the photo, or how you edited it. I really want to know, so please don't skip this part! Then add my button so others can play along! I can't wait to see what you come up with this week!
The photo turned out great. I've been wanting a speedlight, so that when I really must use flash, it doesn't have to be the on camera one.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that flash is da bomb. Pic of Charlie turned out super. Need to get me one of those.
ReplyDeleteSuper shot. I would not have known it was taken with a flash. Every winter I drag out my speedlight. Hardly use it any other time of year. If you are interested here is a post I did yesterday of using my speedlight off camera. http://skcphotos.blogspot.com/2011/01/013365a-pear-flower-some-berries-and.html
ReplyDeleteI just edited my post to add my tip about natural lighting, but I would love to eventually get an external flash for photos that are a must at night. Your photo turned out great and I love how the color of his eyes comes through!
ReplyDeleteI like shooting mine at a 45 degree angle behind me...but I'm loving the catchlights you're getting!
ReplyDeleteAren't speedlights AWESOME?? I love mine ;)
ReplyDeletehaha mine posted twice! sorry about that... don't know what happened there. :)
