Finally, I eyeballed where I wanted the "center line" to be (even though it's not really in the center) and then I put some 2" blue painters' tape along that line. I used my level as I put the tape up to make sure that it was straight. Then I took the frames that I wanted on the bottom row and measured from the top of each frame down to where the hook was, so that I could measure down from the tape line on the wall and mark where my nail needed to be so that when I hung the frame the top of the frame would line up with the bottom of my tape line. For the top (or maybe I should say middle) row I measured from the bottom of the frame up to the hook so that the bottom of the frame would line up with the top of my tape line. (make sense?) Finally, I filled in with the smaller frames along the top, just kind of eyeballing where I'd want them to go, then marking where the top of the frame should be on the wall, and then measuring down to the hook and placing the nail accordingly. OMG I am totally confusing myself with my directions, but seriously, it was pretty easy, just give it a shot.
Once all the frames were up I put photos in the ones that needed them or changed out ones that I didn't really like on the wall. I still have a few left to do, but you definitely get the idea. I finished each frame off with some of that wall putty (or poster tack) stuff on the bottom two corners of each frame because I cannot be having my gorgeous gallery wall getting all crooked everytime somebody (like Camden) slams the front door.
And finally...here's the (almost) finished product!
I even made my own subway art EXACTLY like something I saw on pinterest with all of our birthdays in black, and Chris and my anniversary in white. (The font is called Modern No 20 if you're curious like I was).
I am completely in love with how it turned out. I think it totally makes the room look finished and I wish I would have done it years ago! What do you think? Do you have a gallery wall in your house? Are you going to do one now?

ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful! I've sorta got the beginnings of one on the go, right now. Maybe not so much of a collage effect, but more of a 'museum' gallery style. I've yet to have any of my own photos displayed on my walls, and figured it's about time ;)

ReplyDeleteSuper pretty. Now what do I have to do to "make the wall"?
ReplyDeleteAnd love the new blog header.
What a great feature wall!! Good job!
ReplyDeleteIt looks FANTASTIC!!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! I have absolutely all my wall space used up with photo frames placed like this, but not as many (4 here, 5 there) I wish I had taken the plunge and put a whole bunch up like this. It's quite hard to change now though as I would be left with holes in my wall from taking out hooks.
ReplyDeleteReally stunning though. Well done.
