and then she snapped: before and after living room

before and after living room

My house is (kinda) clean today so I thought I'd snap a few pictures and show you what we've done in the (formal-ish) living room. First off are the before pictures. (As in, before the house was ours). As you can probably tell, the living room and dining room share one big space. We broke it up by putting hardwood floors in the dining section.

I like how the previous owners had stuff on the walls. I am REALLY not good at hanging stuff on the walls. In fact, I could really use help in that particular area. Anybody want to come over and help me?

I like this chair and the little wall table (belonging to the previous owners), but this is where we keep our piano.

This is our house now (and this is what it looks like as of today). Looking at these pictures totally makes me want to move the bench off the front porch. In fact I may do that right after I post this. It distracts from the window! In this room we painted (lambswool by pratt and lambert, do you see a theme?), we got new carpet, and we changed out the entry way light fixture.

What do you think? I recently rearranged (after the buffet incident), and I think I like it, but I'm always open to others' suggestions. And again, please tell me what to hang on that huge ass wall above the sofa. I know it needs something, I just don't know what!

In case you care about where stuff came from: the sofa is a hide-a-bed (we can have guests!) and the lamp to the left of it are from Bassett way back when my cousin used to work there, the two arm chairs and the round side table are from TJMaxx (score!), the red ottoman is from overstock.com, the piano is a hand-me-down from my aunt and uncle (thank you!), the entryway table was inherited from Chris' Grama Ruth, and the entry way rug is from TJMaxx. The curtains are so old (we brought them from our old house) that I don't remember where they came from, but if I had to guess I'd say they were vintage Target. : )

  1. I'd say you need a giant canvas gallery wrap above the couch of either a family portrait or one of your favorite photos.

  2. I agree a giant canvas above the sofa would tie it together. Other then that it looks good..

    Love the sofa.

  3. Did you try putting the couch where the side chair nearest to the dining table is? It would help more define the living room space as a separate area. Then you could move the two side chairs side by side in front of the window and bring the piano back against the large wal, or some other piece of furniturel. With the tryptic in the dr, everyone is right, a great large piece of art, one of your pics, would be great on the wall. Just an idea. The room looks great as is!

  4. I'm big on salon-style photo arrangements. I think that a whole slew of your photos would loook great hung on that big wall. You could get a bunch of frames from thrift stores and paint them all the same color, that way they will feel like they belong together.

Overall I think the room looks great. My living room is full of mismatched hand-me-around furniture and the carpet needs to be replaced in a big way. I envy anyone who has a room with coordinated furniture!

  5. What a cute space! I'll come over and be your guest so I can use your hide-a-bed! I say put up canvasses as artwork! That's gonna be my next thing. Or look on pinterest for inspirational quotes and do a DIY board of one sort! :)

  6. Love the improvements you've made! You should frame some of your wonderful photos to hang above your couch!

  7. I love it all. I think of furniture as mobile though, so use it like that for awhile, then break it up in a different way later. For example, you could push the ottoman under the window and throw a cozy blanket on it, push one chair to the side and have an asymmetrical room with more floor space for the kiddos- or Twister. However you put the furniture, that large wall is a focal point. I love the idea of a large canvas that people mentioned earlier. And others suggested using some of your photos. What about if you combine that advice and take your favorite photo and have it blown up huge and printed on canvas? (I have that photo of a train on my wall and I love it)

Looks great though! I like the use of textures and colors. Brava!

  9. Dont purchase one thing! I am an interior design consultant by trade and I have to say why invest in someone elses work??

Choose on of your favs... make a large print of it (just on inexpensive paper) then simply tac it up on that wall... live with it for a week or so -- if you love it either canvas wrap or frame... Those are the expensive parts.

This way you will KNOW if its worth the investment!

  11. I think you are off to a great start! That is a big room and big rooms intimidate me. I think a series of 6 or even 3x3x3 (9) uber large frames for family photos would look awesome above the couch and would bring a very personal touch to the room. Anyways, great job! Love the red ottoman.

  13. A big piece or a collage would be nice. Some black frames with some silver/bronze (what ever your metal choice) Puts in some photos in black/white or a gray tone of sepia. I find it easier to pick a few photos I love over just one.

I just did a collage, and I used paper bags and did the frame size. Taped them up with masking tape and played with them for weeks. Now you don't have to take that long - but I am flighty and moved them around A LOT. Then I hung the frames - THEN printed photos.

  14. I'm voting for a simple gallery wall. A mix of frames, maybe a small canvas or two, etc. You take gorgeous pics, I vote you display them! Loved sitting in this room, drinking coffee this morning!

  17. Saw the before pictures before I read your explanation and thought you'd just totally redocorated, but it didn't look like your style. I should have known better because of the carpet. I do love your style and think some of your own photos is a great idea!!
